If you've ever been to the Kansas City International Airport, you've seen how much open land is near it. Imagine filling it with the city's largest solar farm!
Kansas City has a goal of becoming carbon free by 2040. Implementing a solar farm to help power the city would help reach that goal, as well as bring more jobs to the area.
According to the Kansas City Business Journal, KC is exploring the possibility of the solar farm being about 2,000 acres. This is enough energy to power the city! Brian Platt, City Manager, is hopeful that this solar farm will allow the city to rely on itself for power, rather than other sources of energy.
Kansas City is making large moves! The new airport is scheduled to be completed in March of 2023, and the potential solar farm would come soon after that.
The city is also putting in major pushes to try and host the 2026 World Cup soccer games. FIFA favors cities that prioritize their sustainability efforts, and a solar farm would boost the credentials.
Flatland KC states that the city officials will weigh their options and prepare their proposal request by early 2022. The project would take about 4 years to complete, and would maximize the city's efforts to become more sustainable.
