At Pinnacle Career Institute (PCI), our mission is to empower students with the skills and confidence they need to excel in their chosen careers. Today, we’re excited to share the inspiring story of Joseph Orris, an HVAC graduate who leveraged PCI’s flexible programs and exceptional support to transform his career and life.
For Joseph, the decision to enroll at PCI was driven by the need for flexibility. Working long hours in his previous job, he needed a program that could fit into his busy schedule. “Most places don’t have hybrid classes,” he shared. “With PCI, I could work and learn at the same time, which made all the difference.”
This unique structure allowed him to pursue his education without compromising his professional and personal responsibilities. “It’s set up in a way that you can succeed if you just show up and stay focused,” he added.
When reflecting on his time at PCI, Joseph highlighted the 80-hour boot camp as the standout experience. “Bootcamp is by far the best thing you do,” he said. “Everything just clicked, especially troubleshooting and brazing. It was an incredible hands-on experience.”
This impactful training not only boosted his confidence but also inspired him to give back. Joseph now plans to return to PCI to speak with current students about his journey and share his expertise in test and balance, a critical HVAC skill.
The journey through PCI’s program helped Joseph grow both personally and professionally. “The program helped me grow professionally in ways I didn’t anticipate,” he said. The rigorous training instilled a deep understanding of safety and technical skills, which became the cornerstone of his success in the field.
Joseph’s journey wasn’t without its challenges. Working 14-hour days while managing coursework required exceptional time management. “I made it work by planning my schedule every week,” he said. “PCI’s flexibility was key. They worked with me to make sure I could succeed.”
In addition to balancing work and studies, Joseph faced personal hurdles. He candidly shared that he navigated his education while going through rehab. “The staff was incredibly supportive and helped me through it,” he said. “PCI really is like a big family.”
Joseph’s advice to new students is simple but powerful: “Stay teachable, stay focused, and listen to your instructors. We had the best instructors-they know so much and really care about your success. They act like your friends, and I still talk to some of them today.”
He also emphasized the importance of perseverance. “It’s okay to feel like you’re struggling at first. Fifty percent effort is still better than zero. The key is to keep showing up and trusting the process.”
PCI’s HVAC program thoroughly prepared Joseph for a successful career. “Getting my EPA 608 certification was huge,” he said. “Without it, you can’t do HVAC work. Bootcamp brought it all together- troubleshooting, brazing- everything started to make sense.”
Today, Joseph is thriving in his new career. He’s traveled all over the country, works with one of the world’s largest test and balance corporations, and has found incredible opportunities in the field. “I’m making twice as much as I did before, and my life is so much more positive now,” he shared. “Financially, I’m in a great place, and I’m growing every day.”
Starting the program wasn’t easy for Joseph. At 35, he hadn’t been in school for years and worried about how challenging it would be. But his philosophy of “getting comfortable being uncomfortable” kept him moving forward. “The instructors were incredibly supportive, and that made all the difference,” he said.
Joseph’s confidence in PCI was cemented early on when he saw how engaged and supportive the instructors were, even in the online portions of the program. “Their interaction made me feel like I made the right choice,” he said.
Looking back, Joseph wishes he’d made the decision to pursue HVAC earlier. “I spent 14 years as a chef before realizing this was my true calling. My stepdad had told me years ago that he wished he’d gone into HVAC, and that conversation planted the seed. After researching, I found PCI and knew it was the right fit.”
Reflecting on his journey, Joseph couldn’t be happier with his decision. “If I could do it all over again at 18, I would,” he said. “This program changed my life. I feel like I have a purpose now.”
Joseph’s career is thriving, and he’s even considering international opportunities, such as working in South America. With every step forward, he’s grateful for the foundation PCI provided. “They prepared me for everything. The instructors made sure we knew exactly what to expect, and I passed all my tests with confidence.”
Joseph Orris’s story is a testament to the power of perseverance, support, and education. From working long hours as a chef to becoming a successful HVAC technician, his journey proves that it’s never too late to follow your dreams.
To anyone considering a career in HVAC, Joseph offers these words of encouragement: “Trust the process, stay focused, and show up. PCI is more than just a school- it’s a family that supports you every step of the way.”
