How To Optimize Your Tutoring Session

If you utilize a tutor, follow these tips to get the most out of the session.

  1. Attempt all the problems of the assignment.  By attempting each problem assigned it will help the tutor determine where you may be having the most trouble.  Sometimes a simple miscalculation can throw you off track.  By attempting each problem, the issues you are having may become clearer.
  2. Notate next to each problem, where you are having trouble.  Be specific.  This will help the tutor, know exactly where the disconnect is coming from.
  3. Show your work.  Again, this is a great way to determine if there is a miscalculation error or a misunderstanding of what the question is asking.
  4. Email the Lead Faculty as soon as possible letting them know you need assistance with your assignment and the assignment number.  They should get back to you within 24 hours and will notify the tutoring that you need assistance. If you do not hear back within 24 hours, contact the Lead Faculty.
  5. Once the appointment time is set, make sure you understand how you are meeting.  Are you meeting through an online session, is it at the campus? How long will it be?  Being fully prepared will also optimize your tutoring session.
  6. Once the tutoring session begins, don’t be afraid to ask questions.  If you do not understand you need to let the tutor know.  Moving on will only hold you back.
  7. Take notes during the session.  Make sure you take good notes while you are in your tutoring session.  You want to make sure your notes are clear enough that you are able to walk away and come back right where you left off.  You should also be able to pick up the notes several days later and know exactly what you were going over.
  8. Ask the tutor if they will be sending you any notes or study material after the session.  If you are working on problems together, the tutor may plan on sending you a copy of the notes.  If they do, you need to combine your notes with theirs.  Review their notes and contact them if anything else is still confusing.
  9. Do not hesitate to schedule another appointment before the current one ends.  It can save you time by setting up the appointment early. You may also be able to get the best time for your schedule by scheduling early.
