How to Answer the Most Common Interview Question...

Written by Cori Fricke | Oct 14, 2021 1:45:00 PM

“So, tell me about yourself.”

What is it about this question that makes your mind go completely blank?  You know more about yourself and your experiences than any other person in the world, so why is it so hard to answer?

The best way to brace yourself for this question is to PREPARE.

Have a solid answer planned out ahead of time.  However, you don’t need to memorize what you want to say word for word.  You should have a plan of what you want to say and the order of which to say it.  If you come across as too rehearsed, your interviewer will be able to tell.  Make it feel natural and professional.

Develop a 1-2 minute speech about your education, skills, qualifications, passions, and why you’d be a good fit for the company.  Your potential employer is asking you this question to analyze your competency and communication skills.

Be sure to mention something from the past (education, previous jobs and certifications), present (where you’re currently working or getting an education), and future (your career goals).

Another important aspect to remember is that you will need to research the responsibilities of this position so that you can tailor your answer to the job requirements.

Don’t get too personal, but don’t make it only about work. This is your chance to show your personality and suitability for the job, so keep it upbeat and positive.  Show that you have passion for something outside of work, like family or traveling.

Once you know what you’re going to say, practice in the mirror and with your friends and family. Mock interviews are a great way to gain confidence and get feedback about your answers.

If you come across as professional and prepared, your interviewer will be impressed.  Do your research on the company, read over the job description thoroughly, and write a dynamic resume. Attack this question with the knowledge you have about the position and how you will be the company's best employee.  Be confident in your abilities!
