GWO Safety Training provides individuals working in the wind energy industry with the additional training they need to perform their job safely. Learn more in today’s blog.
The global wind energy sector has seen rapid growth in recent years. This growth has led to rising demand for trained and skilled workers who can operate turbines safely and effectively.
PCI offers comprehensive GWO certification training for professionals working in the renewable energy sector. These include offshore wind technicians, turbine operators, maintenance engineers, project managers, and other technical staff.
Global Wind Organization (GWO) is an international non-profit organization started in 2008 by a group of wind energy experts from around the world. GWO training courses aim to provide training and certification programs for professionals working with wind turbines in the renewable energy sector.
GWO has developed a unique curriculum of basic safety training and basic technical training designed to meet the specific needs of the wind industry, encompassing all of the necessary skills and knowledge to work safely in a wind turbine environment.
GWO's safety training courses are accredited by the International Accreditation Service (IAS), which accredits more than 1,500 educational institutions worldwide.
This accreditation certifies that an educational program provides quality training in line with industry best practices and standards developed by wind turbine manufacturers and technicians worldwide.
GWO course providers must be certified by a certification body recognized by GWO per common international standards.
These requirements were developed in cooperation between GWO members and various other stakeholders from the wind turbine industry. They aim to support standard industry training practices for health and safety by setting common international standards.
The Global Wind Organization has created basic technical and safety training standards based on technicians' risks. These standards are then used to certify training providers who can provide the training needed to keep workers safe.
When employers accept these standards, they can rest assured that their employees are adequately trained.
GWO training standards help you understand and minimize risks associated with wind turbine safety hazards. They also provide the critical benchmark requirements for passing further wind turbine training courses. Some of these standards are as follows:
The aim here is to ensure a safe work environment by enabling the students to support and care for people who work in the industry and to help them provide ongoing care to an injured or ill casualty over a short period to ensure an efficient rescue operation.
Overall aims for this standard include:
Upon successful completion of the blade repair training program, students will be certified to perform an inspection of a wind turbine blade and repair any damage found during the inspection.
Students must also maintain the aerodynamic profile and structure of the blade throughout the entire process. This involves the ability to:
These include the Lift User Module, Lift Commission and Inspection Module, and the combined Lift Commission, Inspection, Installation, and Maintenance module.
This standard aims to ensure that the student understands how lifts work and what they can do.
Students study lift components, how to operate them, and how they should be maintained. They also learn the importance of safety procedures and how to carry these out. Finally, students gain knowledge of the regulations governing lifts and how to comply with them.
The GWO Slinger Signaler training module's objectives are to enable the trainee to support and care for himself and others while working with sling signaling in the wind industry.
The module equips technicians with the necessary knowledge, abilities, and skills to carry out assigned duties effectively and safely.
The GWS Slinger Signaler training course certifies participants to work in the wind industry using slings during simple lifting operations. These operations include those that are carried out per a lifting schedule or that cover known hazards.

Global Wind Organization Training covers all aspects of the wind industry from turbine design, installation, commissioning, operation and maintenance, safety and environmental protection, economics, policy and regulation, and much more.
Courses feature hands-on activities that put what is learned into practice so that students can apply it in the real world.
Throughout GWO safety training courses, students focus on mastering the fundamental aspects of the following topics:
The GWO Basic Safety Training standard encompasses theoretical knowledge and practical exercises on first aid, fire awareness, manual handling, and working at heights.
First aid: Through training in practical and theoretical elements of first aid, participants learn how to administer basic medical treatment in a wind turbine environment in accordance with GWO standards.
Furthermore, they are certified to perform cardiopulmonary resuscitation (CPR) and utilize an automated external defibrillator (AED).
Fire awareness: Participants learn fundamental information and skills to avoid fires, make proper decisions when analyzing a fire, coordinate staff evacuation, and ensure everyone is securely accounted for in the case of an uncontrollable fire.
Participants also learn how to extinguish a fire utilizing simple handheld fire fighting equipment.
Manual handling: This module aims to promote good manual handling and ergonomic behavior, motivate participants to research manual handling alternatives via planning, and impart knowledge on properly performing manual handling tasks in the wind turbine sector.
The BST Manual Handling Module guarantees that participants will demonstrate an approach to manual handling that involves addressing problems in a wind turbine environment.
Working at heights:This module's objective is to certify participants in the safe and comprehensive execution of basic rescue from heights in a remote wind turbine scenario, including inside blade rescue, using basic personal protective equipment (PPE), and theoretical and practical training.
Participants learn to recognize PPE, including European/Global standard markings such as harnesses, hard helmets, lanyards, and others.
The basic technical training course contains three modules: electrical, hydraulics, and mechanical training.
Electrical: The BTT Electrical Module aims to provide the participants with the knowledge and skills necessary to operate safely with electricity under supervision.
Hydraulics: The BTT Hydraulics module's primary objective is to equip the participants with the knowledge and skills necessary to perform fundamental hydraulic duties under the guidance of an experienced technician.
Mechanical training: The purpose of the BTT Mechanical Module is to give the participants the knowledge and skills necessary to carry out basic mechanical engineering tasks while being supervised by an experienced technician.
The GWO Basic Safety Training and GWO Basic Technical Training courses are designed for anyone who needs a comprehensive knowledge of the wind energy field.
They equip students of all levels of experience within the industry with the required knowledge for excellent performance as wind turbine technicians, giving them the skills to competently and safely repair, maintain and troubleshoot wind turbine components while on the job.
The full Basic Safety Training and Basic Technical Training programs each consist of an intensive four-day training course, after which participants are considered competent in all the basic skills needed to work safely in the wind turbine industry.
For those who need to refresh their training status, GWO also offers 3-day Basic Safety Training Refresher courses and Enhanced First Aid Refresher courses.
These courses can also be taken as a team or individually as suits your company's needs.
By completing a GWO training course, you'll join a community of certified professionals who come together to share an internationally recognized standard of excellence in their industry.
