3 Study Habits Online Students Should Adopt

Going to college as a “nontraditional student” can be scary!  You might work full time, or have a family, or both.  How can you find time to also fit studying into your schedule?

Being an online student is much different than taking classes on a college campus.  You don’t have to be in class at a particular time or certain day of the week.  You have to be accountable to get your work handed in on time.  The truth is that you have to teach yourself good study habits.

  1. Figure out what time of the day is best for you to study.  Are you a night owl or an early riser?  When is it going to be quiet around the house or do you need to physically leave home to effectively study?  Be honest with yourself about leaving a few hours of your best times available as study time.  One big piece of advice, it’s not how long you study but how well you spend your time studying!
  2. Fear is the biggest downfall for nontraditional students.  Your completion is dependent upon your diligence!  Don’t let fear prevent you from achieving your goals.  College is supposed to be difficult so don’t stress about having demanding homework.  Staying positive and pushing through things is a key to success.
  3. Support is also extremely important.  Who can you call when you are stressed about a test or a big assignment that is due?  Who will pat you on the back and tell you that you are doing the right thing?  Find these people and keep them close!

Successfully finishing your college program can be done as an adult!  You are just going to have to teach yourself what works best for you.  Don’t keep things to yourself.  Ask questions and learn what works for others.  Joining a study group or finding a study buddy might also prove to be beneficial.  You can do this!  Just remember what your motivation is and use it!
